Meaning of "from"

[edit]

What does 'from' mean? I would take it to mean 'born in' which Gerald Ford wasn't. Can we be specific? DJ Clayworth 14:22, 15 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't know. It seems if Michigan is their current residence, or maybe if it greatly influenced their life and/or was what made them/where they got famous. Though by that logic, Hemingway deserves some mention, as he spent nearly every summer of his childhood in the state. - IstvanWolf 03:02, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it means people who have lived here.66.82.9.87 (talk) 23:32, 26 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Split up article

[edit]

This article is over 120K long, and can slow many people's computers down. I tried to disambiguate a link on the page and it took a while to do, even though I only edited a section. I am just suggesting this, because I am sure that there are people out there that will be able to do something with this page. --Willy No1lakersfan (Talk - Contribs) 03:21, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, so I've just moved the actors into List of Michigan actors, the sports figures into List of Michigan sports figures, and the writers into List of Michigan writers. Other sections can be split off, too, but this is a start. Rosiestep (talk) 05:20, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Needs disambiguating. Aille (talk) 20:28, 25 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Chad Curtis

[edit]

With regard to Chad Curtis -- A person can certainly be certainly notable for his crime. If he meets GNG. As here. There is GNG coverage of it. That is how we determine notability for crime. --2604:2000:E016:A700:C5A9:426C:F70E:D718 (talk) 07:10, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He is already listed on List of Michigan sports figures. I have no objection to you adding "and convicted sex offender" to his description there. Satisfactory? John from Idegon (talk) 08:09, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please also keep in mind that it is highly doubtful that he would merit a biography solely based on his crime. He is only notable because he was a baseball player. Frankly, his crimes don't rise to the level of notability either. Heinous does not equate to notable. Crimes have to have sustained and widespread coverage. Since you seem bound and determined to add this info to as many articles as you possibly can, perhaps you should create an article on the crime? John from Idegon (talk) 08:16, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
How do you come to that conclusion? As I see it, he clearly meets GNG. Not because someone may view his conviction, and the subsequent civil lawsuit, as being driven by a number of heinous acts -- I'm not sure why you presume that. But because he meets GNG. Because his three acts that led to his criminal conviction, and his four acts that led to the civil lawsuit (now partially settled), have attracted a great deal of GNG-level RS coverage. 2604:2000:E016:A700:84FA:4E21:6A72:F03B (talk) 16:43, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Biographies must conform to BLP. If he were not already notable for being a ballplayer, any biography of him would fail WP:BLP1E. We also do not put people in multiple places on the same list. As the article List of Michigan sports figures is a valid WP:FORK of this article, you are in essence listing him twice in the same list. John from Idegon (talk) 18:52, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
BLP1E does not apply. This is not one event. There were three victims (at least), in separate attacks. Six sex crimes. A criminal lawsuit, and conviction, and sentencing, and appeal. A civil lawsuit (by four), and partial settlement. All of this took place over a number of years. And the RS coverage is impressively robust.2604:2000:E016:A700:84FA:4E21:6A72:F03B (talk) 19:21, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I will concede that perhaps his crimes are notable and again encourage you to write an article about those crimes so it could be linked which would help avoid weight issues on another article. His crimes being notable do not change the fact that discounting his professional athletics career, he would not be notable. Committing notable crimes does not in itself make the perp notable. We are in no way talking about Ted Bundy here. John from Idegon (talk) 20:41, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
