PM will need to be changed to Roosevelt Skerrit as soon as he is approved?/installed?. Someone has already changed it on List of national leaders but it doesn't seem to be official quite yet. Rmhermen 21:48, Jan 7, 2004 (UTC)

Carib Villages

By 1903, Edward VII was on the throne, so the special status of the villages cannot have been granted by "the British Queen". In any case, British monarchs don't rule, they reign.

The reservations were either devised by the Colonial Office or, more likely, the local Governor, Administrator or District Officer.

It would be interesting to read more on the history of the Carib people and the Nineteenth Century "black" government of the island, rather than Dominica's hum-drum life as yet another British colony, in the Twentieth Century.

Impossibility

"This special Carib Territory was granted by the British Queen in 1903" - but that's impossible, as the Queen then was Queen Alexandra, who had no involvement. Did it happen under Edward VII, or earlier under Queen Victoria? P.M.Lawrence.

Territorial dispute re Isla de Aves

The section Geography and climate/Territorial disputes contradicts the information in the article on Isla de Aves, which states

"2006 Dominica and Venezuela informal agreement

"During a visit to Venezuela, Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, in June 2006, stated that Aves Island belongs to Venezuela, unofficially ending the territorial claim.[8]"

Energy

Third syllable? Or second-to-last syllable?

The section entitled "Etymology" includes the following paragraph describing the correct pronunciation of "Dominica" (I have added italics to highlight the correctly emphasized syllable):

"Dominica's name is pronounced with emphasis on the third syllable, following the Spanish pronunciation of its name given to it by Christopher Columbus."

I was taught that in Spanish, when there is no accent to indicate otherwise, the emphasis is on the second-to-last syllable (that is, counting backward from the end). Thus, while it is technically correct that the emphasis is on the third syllable (when counting forward from the start), the reasoning provided is incorrect.

I am not fluent in Spanish, so I don't feel that I should make an edit regarding pronunciation without first consulting other wikipedians who are fluent in Spanish. Cowingzitron (talk) 18:12, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
