[edit]

I'm not sure if this page should actually redirect to the British Open (Wimbledon Championships tennis), although that will be where most people will link to. Maybe the following construction should be used:

  • Put the page about the tennis championships on Wimbledon Championships
  • Redirect Wimbledon to Wimbledon Championships
  • add a notice (at the top or bottom) for the town (or neighbourhood?) of Wimbledon in London

WimbledonWimbledon (disambiguation) – Searching for "Wimbledon" is far more likely to be for the tennis tournament than anything else. Wimbledon should be a redirect to The Championships, Wimbledon with a note there to redirect to the dab page. —Wknight94 (talk) 13:56, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • As the person who last cleared out the links leading to Wimbledon, although most were for the tennis, a few were for the place, a few for the football club, a few for the train station and one for the the film. When I was done I certainly felt that doubt existed and the dab page should remain. I wish this discussion had commenced earlier so I could have recorded some stats (maybe next time if anyone is interested). --Commander Keane 16:32, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • To me, the most important thing is what most people think of when they think of "Wimbledon". My guess is the tennis tournament. Almost anyone outside of the U.K. is thinking of the tournament - and that's a lot of people. Just because there are a lot of pages with Wimbledon in their name and editors have linked a lot of them to each other doesn't mean that the tennis tournament still isn't the most popular destination. But if I'm in the minority with that opinion, then so be it. —Wknight94 (talk) 17:07, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Is there a way to get a count of how many times a page has been visited? That's a more telling stat than how many links there are to a page. —Wknight94 (talk) 17:10, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Simone de Almeida and James Hunter should be added to the notable residents list because they are Laureates representing Richmond. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:EAD1:7B00:55D2:F733:B8C4:AE41 (talk) 14:10, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 3 July 2022

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: No consensus for the disambiguation page, but tournament moved to Wimbledon Championships. Since the two moves were for different reasons, they are to have separate conclusions.

  • The primary topic debate failed to reach a consensus. The opposition implicitly argued that the namesake town had competitive long-term significance and lack of confidence on the usage while the tournament is not running, while the supporters relied on the brute force of pageviews evidence. Nobody can budge. A rerun of this issue in another RM could help clarify an answer.
  • Participants generally rejected the original proposed tournament title, and multiple opposers in addition to a supporter and a neutral party supported Wimbledon Championships instead; the appeal of this other suggestion across disparate opinions of these participants made this appear to be the title with the firmest consensus. – Primary topic for this title is the tennis tournament. The tournament even has their website at Wimbledon.com. The town has longer history but is not as well known. It appears a different proposal was discussed here (moving the town to primary) with many editors instead suggesting The Championships, Wimbledon -> Wimbledon. Natg 19 (talk) 20:08, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose. Works fine as it is. The Championships is even at the top of the disambiguation page. Furthermore, people tend to google it, and will find the correct articles pretty easy. Sine Cera, Infobesity (talk) 12:16, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose There are 25 links (plus one red) on the page. At most times of year there's a good chance that a reader arriving here would be looking for something other than the tennis.--Cavrdg (talk) 08:17, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. I would take an educated guess that 99% of the time, no matter what time of year, it would be for the granddaddy of all tennis tournaments. Obviously the community rules of where we put the article, but let's not kid ourselves. Fyunck(click) (talk) 08:30, 9 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wimbledon, New South Wales

[edit]

There is also a Wimbledon close to where I live.

It's even smaller than Hobbys Yards but we have articles for even smaller places in the US, so maybe... Andrewa (talk) 00:47, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have added it, it seems to be legally recognized[1]. Crouch, Swale (talk) 07:38, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
