[edit]The content of the how to cook dandelions aticle has been moved to wikibooks. Somehow, it escaped deletion here, although the archive i found of the VfD page here had 4 delete votes and no keep votes. It might need to be placed on WP:VfD again to get rid of it. Google as a usage guide
[edit]You are right, it is academic to the charity shop page, so I won't continue the discussion on that page and I don't intend to bug you endlessly on this point, but I would just like to point out that the 3:1 bias for US usage is not uncommon. Indeed it's on the low side. For example -
- flavor = 4,080,000 ; flavour 1,430,000
- anemia = 1,510,000; anaemia = 317,000
- fetus = 1,210,000; foetus = 278,000
- "green thumb" = 202,000; ("green fingers" = 25,700) (green fingered = 13,600 ) = 39,300
- "fanny pack" = 152,000; "bum bag" = 9,450
- And this is because there are (probably, I've no stat to prove this) more websites in the US than in the rest of the world put together. Mintguy (T) 18:48, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Dead Horse
[edit]Thank you for your informational update here: Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Beating a dead horse. Also, I notcied you did not actually vote. Was this intentional? Rex071404 00:56, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)
As far as "idioms" go, individual pages such as the dead horse one of today, allow readers to see the cultural catch-phrases in actual usage examples. In this instance, I see no radical detriment to the Wiki if individual pages are allowed. Certainly if they are reasonably well written, we should err on the side of inclusion, not exclusion. I think that any pages which expand a readers knowledge of usage patterns are worthwhile. Also, etymology and linguistics are undervalued skills and fall in between dictionaries and encyclopedias. Slipknot
[edit]Sorry, this case went out of my mind. Thanx to have made the changes I should have done myself...
Concerning Slipknot (knot), I have no idea. On fr, we usually make the "basic" page (here Slipknot) a disambigution page linking to the others (Slipknot (knot) and Slipknot (band)); I noticed that on en, the "tradition" was to use the basic page for the more common meaning (here the knot imho), then to create a Slipknot (disambig) page. Anyway, the redirection from slipknot to Slipknot (band) is not a problem as long as the other article does not exist...
Thanx again

Dhabawallah
[edit]In Dhabawallah, you wrote that people in the system get "paid about 4000 rupees (which equals around 50 British pounds)." But over what time period is this? Per hour? Per day? Per month? The answer dramatically affects interpretation. - RedWordSmith 12:33, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Cancer Coast
[edit]Hi, I just thought I would give you a friendly update on the cancer coast redirect. First of all, I've spent about a week adding content to cancer clusters and list of cancer clusters. Basically, I've just been establishing a framework for the subject matter. The cancer cluster page has some basic, introductory info, and the list page has some interesting data with mulitple source refs. I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that I haven't forgotten about this page, but I have neglected to merge the data in question until I can verify it, which so far has been a tedius process. I'll have some free time on the fourth, so I hope I have a more serious answer at that point. Any criticism or suggestions would be appreciated. --Viriditas 10:30, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I don't have a clue where to begin to do something with that article. As I said on cleanup, it's just bizarre. If the guy is making up terms on Wikipedia, he should be banned. RickK 23:39, Oct 3, 2004 (UTC)
Mea culpa
[edit]- A thousand thank yous to User:RedWordSmith for bringing to my attention a most heinous offense. I voted twice in several polls over the past few days. I can only kneel before you, proclaiming ten thousand appologies, and throw myself on the mercy of the Wikipedia, pleading insanity. In my defense, I submit that anyone wanting to subvert the voting process would be careful not to vote twice with their own name. Only an idiot who was unable to keep track of which polls he had voted on already would make such a transparent and shamefull error. I recant. Yours, in contrition, Intrigue 16:00, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thought I'd drop you a line to say hello since Wikipedia:Nooks and corners of Wikipedia that should be frequented is your baby and I've been updating the WP:RFA section. I don't often vote in the adminship elections, but I do like to read the debates and with my updates I've been making that little contribution to the cause. Disgaea
[edit]For a book, it makes sense to put the descriptor "fictional" at the beginning of the article, since there are so many non-fictional books. But Disgaea is a video game. First, the vast majority of video and computer game articles on Wikipedia do not feature an adjective "fictional". Second, I think it's self-evident that Disgaea, as a video game, is fictional.
Furthermore, the designations of "fictional"/"non-fictional" don't even apply well to video/computer games. What is a "non-fictional" video/computer game? A simulator? Is a simulator "non-fictional", or does it merely simulate reality? Even video/computer games based on historical scenarios aren't really "non-fictional"—nor are they really "fictional"; the terms simply aren't entirely appropriate.
—Lowellian (talk)[[]] 23:00, Nov 7, 2004 (UTC)
In the case of Disgaea, "fantasy" is acceptable to me. —Lowellian (talk)[[]] 23:19, Nov 7, 2004 (UTC)

Euroscepticism
[edit]Hello. What result are you looking for here? It looks to me like Euroscepticism was moved to Euroskepticism inappropriately. There's a lengthy history at Euroskepticism (the page move destination) and a short one at Euroscepticism. I'm inclined to delete Euroscepticism, move Euroskepticism there, and revert the redirect. That will restore the status quo ante Nov 24. Theoretically speaking someone would need to merge in any changes made since Nov 24, with attribution. I'm not willing to do that. If you are, I will delete/rename as described above and leave the rest to you. Hope this helps, Wile E. Heresiarch 19:06, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Congratulations, Nic!
[edit]Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 21:53, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Reason for removal of text?
[edit]I have several times entered the following into the article on "President of the USA" and it has each time been deleted, without any comment being left in the appropriate "Talk" section on Numbering where I ask for comments.
As I see to my surprise that you are a Wikipedia administrator, rather than one of the crackpots who play around with articles, I would ask why you remove this, and without any comment on your reasons (or have I failed to find the comment)? It is both true and relevant. While it is simply a curiosity of little importance, it is not out of place in a comprehensive encyclopedia.
"Stephen Grover Cleveland had two non-consecutive terms as President, and is counted twice in the official list of Presidents. Consequently, all subsequent Presidents who are referred to as "the <n>th President of the United States" are actually the <n-1>th person to hold the office. E.g., George W. Bush, 43rd President, is actually the 42nd person to be President."
Best wishes, michael@ms3.org.uk 213.208.107.91 03:45, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
[Response on User talk:213.208.107.91]
Thanks for your message re my addition commenting that president <n> is person <n-1>. I've reinstated the material, with a bit more text to let readers check for themselves (it's not really a new fact, but analysis of the existing text, readily confirmed). There is a related comment in Talk/Numbering, so I'd hope it doesn't get deleted without comment.
Hopefully this is one of the little things that gives Wikipedia the edge over others.
Best wishes. 213.208.107.91 14:25, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing
[edit]Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

RFA Commentary
[edit]Salve, RedWordSmith!
Thanks for your vote on my WP:RFA candidacy and for the e-mail about my critics. I don't have a computer at home so I didn't see your message until after I checked Wikipedia here at the library the day before yesterday. I was grateful that in my absence Andrevan posted my reply to these same criticisms about multiple edits from my last candidacy. The usual suspects, as Captain Renault would say, were opposing my candidacy, which isn't a surprise. But it's annoying that they should bring up the same grounds again for opposing. You will note that there is nothing critical of what I've written or my conduct in relation to others, just that I save a lot and keep track of my ranking. Fortunately the vote, last I saw, was running about seven to one in my favor, the voters having disregarded the critics. Again, thanks for your help. Ave! 3RR question
[edit]Thanks for your informative comments about self-reverts on the Administrators' noticeboard. I'm still not clear on the actual policy, howver, as it is not explicit. I interpret the policy to mean that when counting reverts, the actual self-revert doesn't count, but the revert that is being replaced counts as a revert since it was a reversion of a previous version, unlike the self-revert itself which is an attempt to restore the version before the revert. In your opinion, is my interpretation correct? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer. No hurry on this. --Viriditas | Talk 14:17, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Your comments were very helpful as usual. I would actually like to run MediaWiki software at home and play around with it, but I haven't had any time lately.
