Royal Grammar School, Newcastle was proposed for deletion. This page is an archive of the discussion about the proposed deletion. This page is no longer live. Almost a speedy delete IMHO. Entire content of the article is "Winning the title of best school in the world for the past 520 years, the RGS is epicentre of the world's knowledge." Is this a newbie test? A joke? Someone disrupting Wikipedia to illustrate a point? There are at least twenty-one places in the world named Newcastle. This school is probably in Newcastle upon Tyne. Our fairly lengthy article on that city mentions twenty "places of interest:" the Royal Grammar School is not among them. At the risk of undermining my own argument, I will note that the school's website says "Although the exact date is a matter of argument, tradition has it that the Royal Grammar School was founded in 1545." In my experience phrases such as "tradition has it" are code for "this is not true," but it probably is a really old school institution (it has only been in its present building since 1906). Precisely what title it has won five hundred and twenty years in a row remains a matter of conjecture. [[User:Dpbsmith|Dpbsmith (talk)]] 23:50, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- The school is probably notable, (like most UK independent schools) but the present content is a speedy as it's patent nonsense. Dunc|☺ 23:53, 15 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Just as a note - 1545 is probably as reliable a date as you can get, and it's probably an intrinsically notable place to some degree. Schools this old tend to be a little vague about founding dates; it's often unclear exactly when they gained the status they now exist under, or if there was a major move records may be shoddy. (The (moderately encylopedic) school I went to was "founded" in 1628, as an orphanage, but never saw a child for the next forty years or so, as an example... and thanks to pre-existing institutions, dates can go wild. The University of Dundee, est. 1967, can be shown to be older than Oxford University if you squint hard). For the record, I'd have voted to keep an article on the school, but voted to delete this article. Shimgray 17:10, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)
