- 1859 – Grand Trunk Railway completes construction of the rail line from Toronto to Sarnia, Ontario, and begins a train ferry connection across the St. Clair River at Fort Gratiot.[1]
- 1877 – The Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa and Occidental Railway opens, traversing a route from Montreal through Lachute to Hull.[2]
- 1883 – Cyrus S. Eaton, president of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in the 1950s, is born (d. 1979).
- 2002 – The first X'Trapolis (pictured) train enters service with Connex in Melbourne, Australia.
