Is this page about Bacteriostatic antibiotics rather than Bacteriostatic or Bacteriostatic agents?

For example, bacteriostatic water contains no antibiotics but rather it contains Benzyl Alchhol. So "bacteriostatic" does not mean "Bacteriostatic antibiotic", does it? Iambk 22:48, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mention of Oligodynamic effect?

This page is linked from the aluminium bronze page, which discuss how marine organisms do not grow on the alloys due to the biostatic effect etc. This seems similar enough to the oligodynamic effect to make it worth mentioning in the article, but at the very least this should be added to the "see also" section? Merge discussion

A merger with Bacteriostat has been proposed.

As far as I see, these articles talk about different things: Bacteriostatic agent about bacteriostatic antibacterials, the other article about chemicals used to prevent growth of bacteria in plastics etc. A merger would be somewhat in line with the article Bactericide, which also is a sort of catch-all.

The other, and possibly cleaner, possibility would be to discuss bacteriostatic and bactericidal antibacterials in Antibacterial, bactericidal antiseptics in Antiseptic, bactericidal disinfectants in Disinfectant, and keep Bactericide as a disambig. Bacteriostatic agent/Bacteriostat could then be reserved for the discussion of such chemicals, probably with a hatnote to Antibacterial. --ἀνυπόδητος (talk) 10:33, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Support merge. It seems to me that "bacteriostat" is kind of a general descriptor word, more like a potential Wikitionary entry than a subject for an encyclopedia article. Therefore, I think the merge target should be Bacteriostatic agent, which refers to the molecules themselves (with Bacteriostat as a redirect). I take your point about pharmaceuticals versus chemical additives, but that distinction can be covered in the merged article. I don't think we need two stubs to cover, separately, what will remain a rather small amount of information. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:33, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Support merge. I agree with Tryptofish, just reading the first sentence in bacteriostat sounds like a dictionary reference. Additionally, other than mentioning different examples, they both sound the same content wise. I can see the subtle difference between the two chemically but that seems more like semantics and remnant of an underlying leaning on the parts of the original authors. Personally, when I hear the word "bacteriostatic" I think of bacteriostatic water used for dissolution or dilution of drugs before injection. That uses benzyl alcohol as a preservative, sort of combining the chemical and pharmaceutical aspects. Falconerd (talk) 04:24, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
